Experience a trip back in time by discovering the abandoned settlement on the picturesque island of Scarp, with the opportunity of seeing a range of wildlife on the way.
Cruising round this breath -taking coastline takes you past the tallest cliffs on Lewis, white sand beaches, sea stacks and the stunning island of Mealista, which is rumoured to be haunted. Further south, we enter Loch Reisort: a long sea-loch which divides Lewis and Harris. Ancient settlements nestle on its steep slopes, grazed by red deer, while Sea Eagles and Golden Eagles are frequently seen circling high overhead.
The recent film “The Rocket Post”, was adapted from a true story based in Scarp; On the 28th July 1934 Herr Gerhard Zucker demonstrated his rocket-mail invention, a one-metre-long rocket that would carry several thousand letters from Scarp to Harris at 1,000 mph. Unfortunately the rocket exploded when the fuse was lit, scattering the mail in all directions. The postman retrieved the mail and a second attempt was made, this time from Harris to Scarp; despite this attempt being successful, however, the project was abandoned. This is one of the many stories from this beautiful island that was inhabited up to 1971.
Landing on Scarp allows time to explore the old blackhouses, school and manse -steeped in history of how island life was in times gone by. Lochlann then cruises back to Miavaig, with many further opportunities to spot sea birds, dolphins, whales and basking sharks.
